The Mission of NW Ohio Bible Quizzing: To challenge young people through fun and competition
Why Bible Quizzing? Bible Quizzing is Bible Study. Quizzers not only learn by hearing from adults, but they learn to study God’s Word for themselves. By becoming involved in Bible study, young people develop a love and respect for the Bible. The Word is planted in their hearts and dynamically influences them. Bible Quizzing is about Christian Friendships. The need for friendship is a basic psychological need, and teenagers are bombarded from all sides with ways to fill this need. But perhaps a greater need is the spiritual desire for good Christian friendships. Bible quizzing, through practice time and in quiz meets, sets the stage for friendships to develop with other committed young people, who have similar values and interests. Bible Quizzing is Teamwork. Through teamwork, Bible Quizzing helps young people develop a genuine concern for others. As a team, quizzers encourage teammates and are encouraged by each other. They soon learn that the Lord is a part of each team, and relying on Him will bring the true rewards. This team environment is a place where personalities are molded, and Christian character is built. Bible Quizzing Develops a Mature Competitive Spirit. The hallmark of Bible Quizzing competition is that teens have learned to compete WITH other teams and not AGAINST them. It is not an unfamiliar sight to see quizzers encourage the other team as well as there own teammates. Bible Quizzing Builds Life Learning Skills. Repeatedly, we have seen God pour confidence, self-esteem, teamwork skills, speaking ability and other mental abilities into the lives of young people who have given of themselves to spend time in God’s Word. Bible Quizzing is about Disciple-making and Mission. Many of the participants in Bible Quizzing go on to serve the church in many ways. It is important to remember that the aim of Bible Quizzing is not to produce Bible scholars, but disciples who are eager to serve Christ. Although we rejoice with quizzer’s accomplishments, we rejoice even more whenever a teen is following Jesus, and seeking His will.
How does Bible Quizzing Work Eligible quizzers range from age 12 through age 20. Teams consist of four to seven youth, with four competing at a time. Substitutions are permitted. Two teams compete in each match, with 15 – 18 questions asked per match. Response time is determined by electronic timing devices, activated by a hand held button. Presiding over each quiz match is a quizmaster. There are also judges, and scorekeepers. The Northwest Ohio League competition takes place from January – mid March. The local Northwest Ohio tournament takes place in late March. A multi-state tournament takes place the last weekend in March. (optional) Material studied changes each year, and the next year’s material is announced at the Multi-state tournament. League and tournament competitions include both team and individual recognition with trophies and other rewards. The bible quizzing program in northwest Ohio has been organized by the area Mennonite churches, although many denominations have participated, including Missionary, Nazarene, Methodist, United church of Christ, and others.
